1.20.2009 - The End of an Error

by Al Supé

I saw this on a bumper sticker, and thought "how times do change!" This area of upstate NY is so Republican that the Democrats don't even run a candidate for office about 1/4 of the time. It thus was amazing to see this bumper sticker.

Then I realized that even the staunchest Republican had heard Bush admit that Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Hidin' had nothing to do with the war in Iraq, which has , by the way, now cost us untold billions of dollars (owed to Communist China, no less!), 4,000+ lives, and God only knows how many wounded, both physically and mentally.

A national TV network advertizes their anchorman by, among other things, quoting Bush saying "They brought the war to our shores. Don't forget that." Somehow it seems obvious to me that we have now had two Presidents who suffered from Altzhiemer's disease, since Bush admitted that Bin Ladin had nothing to do with Iraq, nor Iraq with him. Except that Iraq has now become a prime training and recruiting ground for terrorists.

Somehow, I think both Democrats and Republicans can agree that the "end of an error" is near. Let's hope that "we don't get fooled again......meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Be careful for whom you vote.

Al, its is great to see you back on these pages. Amazingly, I noticed your column just as I finished reading something in a similar vein from Consortiumnews.com. The article titled, When a Great Power Goes Mad also looks at the fact that, in the words of another President in another time, "Our long national nightmare is over."

Of course, there is the "if" part of the whole thing that you allude to. If we elect the right person.

Perhaps if we elect the right person we will adopt something like the Truth Commission and have everyone come out and explain the truth of what has happened these last 7.5 years. Bring it out in the open and let the world know that we, as a nation, are mature enough to recognize when we made a mistake and deal with.

There is always hope.

Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

Sorry to burst your bubble Al but the reason Republicans would have a bumper sticker like that is not because of the reasons you listed. Pres. Bush has done a lot of things that Republicans don't like. The reasons Republicans dislike Bush are not the same reasons Democrats dislike him.

Senator Hatrack, you are not bursting my bubble at all. This last November saw a lot of former Republican posts go to Democrats. I am well aware of the fact that many Republicans don't like a lot of Bush's actions. I'm saying that the country as a whole, Democrats and Republicans, made the mistake of electing Bush, not once, but twice. And I'm saying that I am only one of millions who will be glad to see his back as he leaves office.

thumbs up

I don't remember who said it but someone once made the comparison of a baby's rear end and politicians. Both need to be changed frequently and the mess they have left behind needs to be cleaned up.

Hey there stranger.... it's so good to see you back here again. Hope all is well with you and yours.

On Topic.... I agree with the assessment of the current administration being an error. Luckily we can correct it peacefully at the ballot box in November. I just wish it would be easier to vote for a winner, instead of voting against someone.

Barack Obama took the oath of office just a few minutes ago, making him the 44th President of the United States of America. I hope - and believe - that we have elected the correct person to start our nation in its healing process, both economically and socially. There has been far too much division, red and blue, in our America for far too long. By the way, he also made history by becoming our first President of color. And that is a "by the way", for it is not important if he is white, colored, green and orange with purple stripes and yellow polka-dots. What is important is that he begin the processes I spoke of above, as well as the process of extricating us from a war of aggression, and carrying on the fight against terrorism, wherever it is found.

Al, I really had nothing to add to this column...I'm just breathing more clearly now that GWB & Company are "outta" there.

However, I love that saying, "The End of an Error!" I'd love to see that in the history books.

Spence, I totally agree with your first sentence.
As for the history books, they will probably be kinder to him then they should be for years to come.
Than there are people, like my sister... who still feel that he was one of our better Presidents. Hard to believe we are related at times.
