Musings
By Spencer Lehmann, RHU Well, I’ll Be Damned! Well shiver me timbers, matey! I never thought I’d say it. In tonight’s (February 21, 2008) Texas Democratic Debate I saw the first true example of Hillary Clinton exhibiting “Class”! The end of the debate witnessed Hillary Clinton genuinely telling Barak Obama that she felt privileged to be on the same debating platform with Barak Obama. I admit, I never thought I’d see the day. While Hillary “pulled that crap” about Barak Obama plagiarizing his comments from a previous candidate’s speeches (even though his comments were not paragraphs, but a few simple sentences that had been suggested he use by the previous candidate, I.e., not plagiarizing), her words not ringing “true”, she ended the debate on a very positive note that I would never have expected. Hillary Clinton demonstrated true class, a characteristic I am convinced did not “hold well” with her campaign staff who would have liked to see Hillary “jump” Obama. This has been a day of political games. Earlier today, we saw John McCain being “slaughtered” by staffers of bygone years. Do we know who they are? Of course not. They were “Anonymous Sources”. BFD! I don’t accept “testimony” from “Anonymous Sources” as credible. Not important in this case, as I am not a fan of John McCain anyway. However, I’m not about to get “exercised” by comments from Mr./Ms. Anonymous. The Pundits have been “grading” tonight’s debate with Obama and Clinton. Most have been giving Clinton an A, and Obama an A-. I give them each an A. I thought they both did well. I give Clinton an A+ for class. And I never thought I’d say that. All in all (or as the pundits have wont to say, “At the end of the day…”) I think it was a good and lively debate. Good on you both, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama. You both showed well the qualities that Americans admire most. Bravo! Spencer A. The Clintons know that if they don't take the next two primaries in a big way (65%) that Hillary can't win. They know that runnning out the clock and trying to take it with Super Delegates is likely to split the Party. They also know that people like Al Gore have been reported as moving behind the scenes to make sure that it doesn't happen.
And she was a real class act tonight. If she had started as a class act, appearing open and honest from the beginning, it would be a different race. I think that Sometime in March she will conceede and Obama will be the designated nominee. The "classiness" was phony. The real Hillary showed in her harping again on Obama's "plagiarism", and especially on the Xerox line. Even I was taken aback by the audience's booing her on that one. But I felt like booing her myself.
Obama was classy. |

I saw it as her preconcession conession speach. The Change by Xerox line fell flat, but she ended with something that was very powerful. It was very gracious and classy.

Sen. Clinton is only concerned about one person, Sen. Clinton. She will do whatever it takes to win the presidency. IMO, she makes Richard M. Nixon look like a class act.

Obama always "comes off" as classy to me. He refuses to appear or react in a flustered or even "miffed" manner to Hillary's "shots", and the only time I have seen him "shake his head" and utter quietly "that simply isn't right" was when Hillary was "harping again on Obama's "plagiarism", and most especially when she pulled that "Xerox line" out of her "kit bag". The "Xerox line" seemed so scripted to me that I think it was a speech writer that threw it in. I not only felt like booing her on that shot, I did. I don't think that anyone would ever accuse me of being a Hillary Clinton fan. My feelings regarding the Clintons have been well documented and recorded by many, I have no doubt. The moment to which I was referring was at the end of the debate when Hillary, in a seemingly spontaneous gesture, commented that she felt privileged to be on a debating platform with Obama. Yes, it was definitely out of character, and unexpected which is what I thought gave it a feeling of being a heartfelt statement, and a "classy comment" and "finish" for her end of the debate. Certainly, I could be wrong. It would hardly be the first time I've been "had". Nevertheless, her comment seemed to me to be an honest realization that (while I expect that she will continue to remain in the race) she will not win the "nod" and become the General Election challenger to John McCain, and that Barak Obama will (which would please me tremendously, as for the first time in my voting life, I will be able to vote "For" someone, instead of for "the lesser of two evils"). The next few days will no doubt either confirm my hope that her comment was truly meant, or let me know that I have, once again, "taken the hook". spoons, Принцесса Spence *** "Don't hold onto resentments, they're not treasures."~ Donna Gayler *** "The only thing necessary for Evil to prevail, is for Good People to do Nothing."~~~Edmund Burke |

Now this, to me, is a very interesting dialogue.
Frank and I seem to be willing to give Hillary Clinton the "benefit of the doubt" on this one brief moment, and Joe and Senator Hatrack do not. Frank and I have never made any "bones" about our displeasure with Senator Clinton, and Senator Hatrack has, if that's possible, made his negative feelings towards her even more obvious than have I, and Joe, I think, was at one time not as harsh in his negative feelings towards her (I may be wrong...the memory ain't what it used ta be). This election seems to have brought about more twists and turns than even I, in my political cynicism, could have imagined. Very interesting. spoons, Принцесса Spence *** "Don't hold onto resentments, they're not treasures."~ Donna Gayler *** "The only thing necessary for Evil to prevail, is for Good People to do Nothing."~~~Edmund Burke |

The Hillary Clinton who is on the presidential campaign trail doesn't seem the same person as the Hillary Clinton who has been a reasonably good senator from the State of New York. She started off as if she were a sure thing to get the nomination. As that picture has dimmed, she has been running scared and lashing out in the usual political fashion: if you can't look all that good yourself, make the other person look bad. Now her demeanor has been re-calculated, at least for the duration of this particular debate, to make her look kinder and gentler. To me, she just looks phony. Although she says some nice things about Obama, profunctorily, her uncontrolled facial expressions and body language convey the attitude of "I'm vastly superior to this schmuck and why can't you foolish people see it".
To some extent, I think she has been a victim of her handlers and of her husband; but she has also been the victim of her own chutzpah in thinking that somehow she deserves the White House and all this hullaballoo (the primaries, the debates, the caucuses) are just a waste of time on her way to her rightful place. Maybe if she loses and comes back to New York, she can work on getting those jobs she promised Western New York State several years ago and which have yet to materialize. |

You stated that really well, Joe. You expressed (in my opinion) a clearly well thought out analysis of the Hillary Clinton we have seen during this contentious race. I certainly don't disagree with anything you have said. In fact, your thoughts are so well articulated that it is my guess that any who weren't sure prior to reading your analysis would now hold no delusions as to Hillary Clinton's motivations for her words. Perhaps I am so anxious to see at least one "bright" and openly honest upbeat "moment" demonstrated by Senator Clinton that I have too quickly wanted to give her "the benefit of the doubt". While in the long run I may "look the fool", I am still going to give her that "moment", unless and until proven wrong. Thank you for the excellent explanation. spoons, Принцесса Spence *** "Don't hold onto resentments, they're not treasures."~ Donna Gayler *** "The only thing necessary for Evil to prevail, is for Good People to do Nothing."~~~Edmund Burke |

On the other hand, you may be correct and I may be reading too much or too little into what I saw and heard.

In regards to a couple of the comments about Senator Clinton doing "whatever it takes" to acquire the office of the Presidency, isn't that what she is supposed to do?
Think about it... would you really want someone nominated that was lackadaisical about winning the election? I don't. The bottom line in politics is "You can't make changes if you don't get elected". Has she been a good Senator for NY? According to everything I've read, she has more then met expectations there. Isn't that why they re-elected her in 2006? Why would anyone think that she would automatically fall apart if elected President? GP ******* It's not what you do on the stage that counts. It's what you do after you leave the stage. I've watched and listened to the debate twice, and I didn't come away with the same thoughts Joe. She seemed genuine in her comments regarding the adversities in her life, even to the point of provoking laughter from Obama and the audience. This quote was the winning statement for the evening though...
This comment, on this night, was good. He appeared almost naive in comparison with his comments about having made some mistakes when he was young. Haven't we all? She reminded all that the election is about "we the people" once again. GP ******* It's not what you do on the stage that counts. It's what you do after you leave the stage.
